BUCKTOWN HISTORY

A LITTLE HISTORY
Legend has it that Bucktown takes its name from the many goats that once roamed its streets at the turn of the twentieth century (male goats are called bucks). Bucktown’s history dates to the early 1800’s, even before Chicago was incorporated as a city. Many Polish immigrants opted to settle in the Bucktown neighborhoods after leaving their war torn country in the early 1830’s.

Over the next few decades, the population and development of Bucktown began to flourish. By the late 1840’s, German immigrants began to settle in Bucktown lured by employment at Chicago's nearby meat packing houses. In 1851, an acre of land could be had for just $32, but three years later the rate had jumped to $500 per acre.

BUCKTOWN TODAY
Today, Bucktown has grown into a diverse population with varying backgrounds. First-class public transportation and retail, combined with proximity to the downtown area, has caused Bucktown real estate to be some of the most in demand in Chicago. The trendy atmosphere is popular for many residents-- even MTV chose Bucktown as a central location for its "The Real World" reality TV program.

There is no official distinction between Bucktown and the adjacent Wicker Park neighborhood. The boundaries between the two complimentary neighborhoods vary depending upon the source. Both areas combine into a sought-after, trendy and thriving residential community that is bound to provide a smart real estate investment.
